I've been like you, maybe not as long though, the Wren is one of the most common birds I see where I am and for 11 months I tried and failed many times. One Sunday afternoon I went to Skipton and walking along the river bank behind the castle I saw a Wren, after watching for a few minutes I managed to work out where it was flying from and too and I got the best image of a Wren so far. They are usually hard to photograph, they're so small and they tend to spend most of their time under bushes, brambles and small trees.
