Four Seasons

Black Pearl

While at Cragside the other day I got chatting to one of the volunteers, an oldish chap who saw me taking pictures and started to fill a few details in of what I was pointing the camera at. These two (four) windows were particularly lovely sitting either side of a rather grand fireplace. Turns out they are by William Morris (of Arts and Crafts Movement fame) and show the four season - left to right Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter. Cragside has a fair few bits by Morris, Burne-Jones and others though these were the only ones I took pictures of an this visit.

This is two images (one of each double window as seen in the rather nasty grab shot at the bottom) combined and tweaked in both Lightroom and Photoshop. The windows are, to say the least, exquisite and I'm ever so grateful for the guide who took the time to talk to me about them. The windows back onto a small courtyard so have been protected over the years but never get direct sunlight so they aren't exactly blazing with brightness. Both were shot at 1/25s using 1600iso on the D300s which is about as high as you would ever want to go on its venerable old (ish) sensor. My AF-S 16-85mm lens has a damn good VR unit which helps keep things shake free but I'd love to go back with the K30 and a 50mm to really have a crack at getting the finest detail.

Crag side is a fascinating place.......only ever seen it on TV........wasn't it the first place to generate its own Electricity and have electric lighting?

Great pics of a wonderful feature BP.
