I agree - number one just doesn't do it all. To be frank, it's just a clump of wood in the centre of the frame. However...

 

Number two is very nice indeed. Nicely composed, great colour and interest from foreground to background. Good stuff!

Always struggle with the colour balance, I'll learn eventually :-)

 

The first one doesn't work, its focussed through the first fence post - not even sure what I was trying :-)

On my Panasonics, having the WB set to Auto would never give me a shot like that; even shooting JPEG would give a good colour balance. Not sure what you did for that shot?
