can't say I like the first but the second image works very well.

I agree - number one just doesn't do it all. To be frank, it's just a clump of wood in the centre of the frame. However...

 

Number two is very nice indeed. Nicely composed, great colour and interest from foreground to background. Good stuff!

No 2 for me and Pauls colour adjustment makes a big difference,

Jon are you shooting Raw? Maybe leave the CB on auto then tweak it afterwards?

On my Panasonics, having the WB set to Auto would never give me a shot like that; even shooting JPEG would give a good colour balance. Not sure what you did for that shot?

Always shoot raw, tend to leave the wb on cloudy.  The colour cast is from the 10 stop filter, I assume, will have to have a practice with lightroom
