Farne Islands Northumberland 2018

Recommended Posts

A few years back me and CanonChrissy and Geodar met up for a trip around the Farne Islands in Northumberland. It was a great day out, but was great to see actual Puffins... I thought they were a lot bigger than they actually turned out to be. They're actually quite small.

The Farne Isles is a great place to see Puffins, Arctic and Sandwich Terns, Guillemots and Razorbills, Shags, Cormorants and Eider Ducks as well as seals. As well as the Farne Islands, you've got Bamburg, Lindisfarne and Berwick not far away, the Northumberland coast is stunning if you've never been before.

This year me and Chrissy are going to the Farne Islands on:

Saturday 30th June 2018

We'll be meeting up at Seahouses and getting the 12noon boat trip using Billy Shiels Farne Island Boat Trip:

Farne Islands Boat Trip

You do need to book in advance... and also be aware that the weather can be be pretty bad even in June - also bring a hat - not just because of the amount of birds pooping whilst flying but because the little Arctic Tern has a habit of dive bombing you and pecking your head if you go near their nests - and as they nest everywhere including the boardwalks around the island you're going to get one or two attacking you to protect their nests.

If you get seasick easily, you might want to take some medication before hand.

The Farne Islands Trip takes 2 1/2 hours, including 1 hour on the Inner Farne.

Lens wise:

You don't need a massive lens, I found with my Sigma 150-600mm I needed to be 9-10ft away, I probably could have got away with a 70-200mm lens on the island, whilst on the boat vistiting the other island the 150-600mm did help...
