  1. I hadn't seen this first time around so thanks Annie for chosing it, Fuji this is one of your best and a well deserved POTW. I love the bunny ears on the chap on the right but the whole picture has so much going for it, a gem of a spot and you are certainly getting great results from your knowledge/lens.
  2. This takes around 3 minutes and is some really great footage taken from the ISS. All of the photographs used to make this time lapse were taken on a Nikon D3 by Knate Myers and are available as public domain via the NASA website. Myers time lapse focus on footage taken at night and includes some phenomenal images of the Milky Way. best views full size and view all or you'll miss the best parts! Enjoy http://player.vimeo....5878034?title=0
  3. Personally I do think all this hiding and plain packets etc is silly and may be counter productive, makes it seem more daring to smoke the hidden weed? And if I may a little story that is perhaps getting off topic but bear with me. My elder brother or sister nor our mother or father ever smoked and I don’t either. Mum died at the age of 63 from leukaemia 4 short months after being diagnosed, we don’t know why as there is no history of it in our family, our father died suddenly at the age of 86, whilst on the Isle of White with his girl friend. His heart burst after a blood clot travelled up from a thrombosis in his leg, he had been out the night before at a dinner dance. Both mum and dad were in good health for their age and we found it hard to believe when they gave mum 6 months to live. My point here is mum spend 4 painful months of chemotherapy before her body gave up and we had to watch her slowly slipping away, smoking my be seriously bad for your health it may be the cause of your death but if its what YOU enjoy I’m not going to suggest you should stop all I know is I would rather go suddenly like my father doing something I enjoy.

    Frames

bit of both Leon, if you like the frames then I would say ta very much and put them to use (maybe even put one of your pictures in one and give it back to them as a thank you?).
  5. I keep saying you live in an odd country stay safe and we'll look forward to reading and seeing some of your posts soon.
  6. whilst this can be true I often use a 77mm circular polarising filter on my 10/20mm wide lens and have never had the poor result shown in the link. on the odd occasion had dark corners but nothing like the sample photo.
  7. if it is any help I have a couple of friends I could contact, they do a lot of subaqua diving and take some good underwater pictures and I know they don't use any thing expensive.
  8. yes, but to be fair two of the dates are a little self inflicted :-)
  9. I noticed this article on the net, interesting reading particularly after reading BP's positing on the Samsung and the Hasselblad sounds a bit of a rip off which is a shame considering the name/pedigree they had http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/Features/The-3-Biggest-Photo-Trends-of-the-Next-2-Years.htm?utm_source=taboola&utm_medium=cpc
  10. I'm not quite sure I understand the way you do things but a screen shot would be great, meanwhile open up CS3 and along the tool bar at the top of the screen (file, edit, image etc) click on 'view' and clear and everything with a tick. Now click on 'windows' on the drop down menu go 'workspace' then click on default workspace - it may also be worth clicking on reset menus. HTH Colin
  11. as said this hallmark email has being going around the net for at least a couple of years, Leon when you copied that to this site did you remove the format (see icon top left second one in on the Reply Box looks like the rubber end of a pencil) it would then be sized to the default setting and colour.
  12. I do tend to take pictures of things that inspire me. But I also look for a challenge, to try and take/make something from the things that don’t inspire me and often the end result can be as if not more satisfying – Leon don’t give up on the trees but maybe think a little more about the composition?
  13. for me black backgrounds often seem to make the subject edges look harsh, but I guess having backgrounds of various colours gets a little expensive and complicated, but if i could I think I would look to make the background suit the subject?
  14. Sounds like they have a bit of a learning curve going on there, well done on the print ;-)
  15. doing a web search I came across a couple of similar cases plus notification that Nikon has upgraded the firmware for the 10/30, assuming the camera is still under warranty (?) I would advise you to take it into a dealer.
  16. Our condolences to the both of you during this sad time. The only help (if that is the right word) is to talk about him and remember the good times, I am lucky to have an older brother and sister to ‘remember’ with.

    Colour IQ Test

thought I'd best post it other wise you'll never believe me... and this was my first go too
  19. mmmmmmmmm you forgot ... RAW or Jpeg
  20. well I've given all this some thought and can actually see a point to this camera. Because of the improvement in camera phones over the last few years small compacts are taking a hit and they need to evolve or they will no longer have much of a market. Most smart phones can take a pretty decent picture and let you edit it with a suitable 'app' and then post it on-line and because, as BP has said, sadly very few people print their photos but many post on-line this Samsung type hybrid may be the future of the compact. I'm not sure I would wish to be an early adaptor and I'm not convince this will not go the way of Betamax or Sonys mini disc. I'm sure there will be many who will buy into this and then find technology moves on very quickly but I do think the compact market does need to compete with the new smart phones/ tablet cameras.
  21. I am using CS3 but this should be very similar in other versions of Photoshop. Open picture, making sure you are able to view the layers tab at the right of your screen (white arrow picture A) and that black is selected as the forground color on the tool bar (left of photo) Click on the ‘create new or adjustment layer’ button looks like half moon (blue arrow) you will notice the gradient is black but do not worry about that for now, if you are using the grad to darken the sky you may need to check the 'reverse' box (arrow pic 2) to ensure the top half of your photo has the black tint. you now need to change the mask layer from Normal to Overlay. Click on the tab at the side of 'normal' (white arrow) and select 'overlay' (blue arrow) from the drop down menu. Your sky should now look a little more 'punchy' but it may look too much so we need to adjust the opacity by using the slider now all you need to do is flatten the layers and 'save as' If you wish rather than using black you can use other colours (for example blue) and it is worth experimenting. You just need to change the foreground colour on the tool bar (red arrow picture 1) I hope this helps, there are other ways of creating a gradient but I thought we would start with what I think is the easiest and simplest. I can't promise it is suitable for all cases but give it a go and why not post up some before/after examples below.

    POTW 04/11/12

    had to be really ;-)
  23. looking good, one day I'll get out and give it a go myself
  24. Well done Leon - bottom six are bloody awful, I would even go as far as saying the page layout is terrible (although it does make your pics stand out ) but it does annoy me they don't give a named credit to who supplied the pictures.
  25. not sure what to make of that (apart from you being a lucky boy) ??? Sounds to a bit like carrying a phone around with you but one that doesn't 'phone', which means you will still have to carry your 'proper' phone which if you like Facebook etc will already have that so why do you need it on a camera that isn't a camera ??? Price wise how will it compare to the current hybrid range of slrs?
