  1. I learnt of Vivian Maier after reading about her in a magazine some time ago, from what I remember she was a quiet lonely woman who took pictures, lots of pictures in her spare time, never ask for fame and never received it. I like her work in particular some of her wide street shots which I think show New York from a different age so superbly. Dave you are fully entitled to you opinion as are Fuji, I and others but I do think you are being unfair about the mirror photo, wireless release? motordrive? would these really have been commercially available in the early 1950's? Why would someone, who from her other photos has so obviously the skill to operate a camera feel the need to let others take a 'self portrait' of her? She simply took photos for her own enjoyment and I think she would have been happy to know that others have enjoyed looking at her work too -RIP Vivian Maier

    Beware!

Such Fun And another doing the rounds are emails from Fedex saying their ‘sorry you were out when they tried to deliver a parcel’ there is a link but gawd knows where it goes. Ask yourself this … Why did they send an email and not just pop a card through your door,? And how would Fedex know your email address as it is not something they would need to know when delivering parcels? Delete!
  3. of course you did…most would be contacting about a refund. Funny there seems to only one guy who this has happened too, and not only once but twice? I'm not sure I believe anyone who photographs the complete opening up of a parcel?
  4. Thank you Dave - I'm not sure i would have got away with doing it this way if it wasn't for the white/grey sky and snow on the ground but well worth a try. At home you could use a white sheet behind the subject and again over expose your subject/photo.
  5. interesting articles Dave, with some stunning pictures, thanks for posting
  6. no Phil. never used it I have always used Nikons ViewnX to adjust and convert my Raw files- but thanks and I will take a look.
  7. Kobione - I guess it all depends on the intended final image and what it is you are trying to achieve if you wish to keep things really simple you can just over expose, ok so these two photos aren't really hi-key but apart from a quick raw conversion and size edit they are straight off the camera. I have a couple of large black and white and (to me at least) they look pretty good. Exposure Aperture: F/5 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Exposure Mode: Manual Exposure Comp.: +2.0EV Metering: Spot ISO Sensitivity: ISO 640
  8. Regarding textures - give me a day or two and I'll do a how to on textured layers but you do need photoshop or similar to do this. As for Hi-key I would do a web search, I've never really had any decent results other than using Adobes Lightroom, had a 30 day trial and I like the software just can't justify buying it when I have photoshop.
  9. because of this crazy world we currently live in and the fact I keep getting made redundant (last job working for Ofsted, HM gov pulled my job end of term last July, now working 3 days per week doing graphic design over in Lincoln) I have a back-up doing a little part time work for a local taxi company (all legal I’m fully ‘badged up’ by local council) and I have noticed this year the ‘services’ are trying and succeeding much better in keeping roads and pathways clear which is good. But there are still far to many 4x4 owners who don’t understand their vehicle will not stop any quicker on ice than a car :o
  10. I seem to remember many small camera shops were killed off by the bigger chain stores such as Jessops as they could not compete on prices, so while they may make a return I don't see how they will compete in today’s web world ? Plus we buy many items over the web simply because traveling to any large city is 16+ miles away, the cost of car parking is getting ridiculous let alone fuel price increases
  11. I understand what you are saying Leon and don't disagree, but sometimes it can help those involved to talk/post about these things in a 'get it off your chest' way?

    Mrwall

very good - and nice to hear BT have improved since the bad old days of the 1970's oh and and 1980's probably the 90's too :hope:

    From the Papers

yup I think that about covers how most of us feel

    Jessops

not good but a sad fact of current life, I feel for you BP having been made redundant myself in 2008 after 21 years working for the same company again last July (working for Ofsted until the government swopped my job for a web site which is proving to be a bit of a flop). All I can advise you is don't give up, there is work out there but not easy to get (especially at my age). And be wary of depression, I found it hard to admit how hard the loss of my career had affected me, good luck with the job hunt and if there is anything I can do to help just ask. As for Jessops I think many of us will miss the store where you could try stuff hands on and I found them handy for small items like filters etc we still have a branch of LCE in Lincoln but I wonder how long they will last?
  15. simply put ...you need G series lens for the 3000 although you could use D series but you will find the auto focus will not work but you can still focus manually.
  16. Nanny you beat me too it I as I intended to post this news up this evening and I would suggest anyone should take the opportunity to download even if you are not sure ‘how to’ use Cs2 as I’m sure we can help members to get grips with the basics. I have just dropped indesign onto my laptop and whilst I’m more used to using the latest version I think I will make good use of having a ‘freebee’ back-up on the laptop. :yes

    POTW 06/01/13

good choice Richard I totally missed the original thread, really like their other shot too.

    G.A.S.

do we assume you are using the kit lens to shoot with? :D
  19. I'm rather surprised he left any unattended bags at an airport, these days it can set off a full scale security alert. :hope:
  20. A new year cracker , loving the link you posted Fuji to the 'light' tutorial, well worth watching
  21. that's worth knowing Fuji, often wonder about stuff from the east via ebay, although I think you do have to be careful with some of the tat on ebay - even UK based items.
  22. I thought it was someone feeding the cat milk but I think it has been going on for too long for that
  23. A serious question for the cat owners… Not sure why but one of our neighbours cats has a terrible diarrhoea problem and leaves small poo circles all over the place. They never really bother with their cats and I wondered if it is possible to buy something to put in some food to help cure the cat. But I’m concerned if they are giving it some treatment double dosing may occur and I would want to make the cat suffer any more. The cat has been suffering this diarrhoea problem for a couple of months at least. Any (sensible) suggestions?
