Yes I read about this on the Amatuer Photography website, great news that we haven't/won't lose Freedom of Panorama, not so good on the few European Countries that don't have it as the vote on the ammendments didn't inculding it to all EU members.
-
To be honest I'm glad someone has tried, even if it meant failing. My first instincts were that it would be very tricky, I'm not planning on trying anytime soon but I know at this time of year they are always about. It's usually Pipistrelle bats I see. But I was pretty sure as they are common around the UK that someone must've tried photographing then before and at least found out that's it's pretty difficult.
-
Thanks Ron that's good to know. I already know where they fly too, down the old railway line to the old mill lodge, no idea where they roost. Yes I was aware that they are protected so would only be watching them as they fly, but didn't think you could actually photograph them.
-
There are lots of bats near where I live, there's an old mill lodge just around the corner and the bats fly down there in the evenings. I've never tried photographing them, actually I wasn't sure if it was even possible? As they only come out at dusk/night I thought that it might be pretty nigh on impossible to photograph them... Or am I wrong?

Looks like 'Common Sense' has prevailed for once and the majority of MEPS voting against it. An overwhelming majority of MEPs have voted against a controversial EU plan which threatened photography of buildings in public spaces. http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/latest/photo-news/european-parliament-rejects-absurd-eu-plan-to-axe-freedom-of-panorama-55708

(Shhhsh.. I can sell you a cheap upgrade to you, for your topic title which allows you to upgrade your title to Voting Now (HINT) - bargins much cheapness, please send your bank account details to make it happen...) -
You don't need to go far and about, 3 of the 5 challenges I've done have been taken in or around my house or at the most 400 yards. The one I have for the Through the Glass was taken in my kitchen, so that makes 4 of 6 . I work full time, abliet self-employed so I can pick and choose... but I like to get things that are close to hand so if it doesn't work the first time I can always do it again

I've enjoyed these weekly challenges so far, and it's been good to have a particular focus and then trying to do it in a creative/innovative way, so I for one will look forward to a monthly challenge.

I came across this recently in Blackburn, when I was asked what I was photograhing and why - in this case it was stairs and I show'd him the pictures - he must have thought I was mad. I did also mention the fact that a new iPhone 6 was more than double the price of my dslr and that there were lots of people taking photographs on their phones. However that said, a mall is usually owned by one company and units rented out, so I suppose you could say that it wasn't really public; in the same way as when you enter a National Trust/English Heritage Property.

This is a link to the blog of Julia Reda, whose ammended report is being voted on: https://juliareda.eu/2015/06/fop-under-threat/ You can write to your MEPS using Writetothem website: https://www.writetothem.com/ It could affect any social media user, (at the moment this is not legislation) purely because the terms of service means you give them a non-exclusive right to use and sub-license any image you upload in any way they like. You also consent as the author that you have the IP rights to any image - which under the 'Freedom of Panorama' means any building/artworks in public places can be photographed and can be used for commercial use without the need to get consent.

Well done pdcpic. great image.

Just bumping this up. -
Yes, I think for your everyday person they wouldn't know that by posting images to Facebook or any other social media network would actually be considered commericial use and that by using their services you not only agree to letting them use any image you upload for any commercial purpose, you also at the same time confirm you have the right to upload. So they wouldn't be going after Facebook or whoever for copyright infringement but to the author.

Sounds good, seems we have a tie-break situation with the latest Weekly Challenge...
-
It's quite a worring development, that something could be changed so radically.

Just wondering how you go about exposing for high contrast birds that are black/white? I always have trouble with them, black-headed gulls, Shellducks, Avocets etc etc Either the darks are too dark or the whites blown. I know it's easier to recover details from dark areas more than whites in PP, but what about catching it in camera? Sorry if it's been asked before, for landscapes I'd think of bracketed shots and a HDR merge, but that's not going to work with birds/sunjects that are moving about - or would it???

Just wondering what happens in the event on a tie in the voting for the Weekly Challenge?

This has cropped up a few times recently - in a local newspaper and more recently on Wikipedia. The UK and many other countries in the EU (though not all) has this as part of copyright laws, which allows anyone to publish photographs, documentary films and other works depicting public places (building and artworks) without restriction, including commercially without needing the consent of the copyright holder. Julia Reda, published a report on EU copyright rules with an aim to standardising them across all EU member states. Two of the things she wanted was : Freedom of Panorama should become a rule in the entire European Union Calls on the EU legislator to ensure that the use of photographs, video footage or other images of works which are permanently located in public places is permitted; In an ammendment which was voted on and passed on 16th June, it was changed to: Considers that the commercial use of photographs, video footage or other images of works which are permanently located in physical public places should always be subject to prior authorisation from the authors or any proxy acting for them; Now, you might think that if you don't sell those images it won't affect you. However, let's say you went to London, took a picture of the London Eye and posted it on Facebook or some other social network. I've checked the TOS for Facebook, Twitter and Flickr (which is run by Yahoo) and by using their services you agree to give them a non-exclusive license to publish, reproduce, sub-license anything you upload for any use including commercial use. There's also a sub-clause which states that you confirm you have the rights to the image (and any consent needed). At the moment this is not legislation, though there is another vote on July 9th. Anyway a couple of links, first is the blog of Julia Reda: https://juliareda.eu/2015/06/fop-under-threat/ You can write to your MEPS using Writetothem website: https://www.writetothem.com/ There's also a petition on Change.org https://www.change.org/p/european-parliament-save-the-freedom-of-photography-savefop-europarl-en

This Item of Clothing one is really challenging me, so I've got my serious photo-thinking head on at the moment... It's not helping, I'm wondering if more wine will help or not???
