To Rock or Not

Black Pearl

Recommended Posts

Second stop of yesterday was Rydal Water on the way to Ambleside. The sun wasn't quite high enough to fill the valley, even though it was now about ten thirty, but it did give a bit of shadow to the island which I liked.

Now when I was standing there drinking in the scene and enjoying the  simple pleasure of being out taking photographs with a friend I spotted a rock that I could get in the foreground and thought "Ooo, that'll work" and I sort of think it still does - but then I sat back and looked at my screen this morning and having sucked my teeth for a while I'm now thinking "Hmmmmmmmmm"

Not the cleanest cloning as its more a cry for help as I really can't decide- over to you:

Rock on!

I like the rock, it gives something to look at in the foreground. If the reflection of the trees middle left were bigger then I would have said no rock, as they would have been nice to look at, but obviously there was a bloomin great rock in the way to start with :)

To quote Humble Pie from their classic 1971 album of the same name .. ROCK ON !!!

Yes, I think it gives more depth, but if you're curious, I wonder how it would look reduced by about a third in Photoshop?

In fact, wonder no more, as I just had a go... (excuse the less than expert re-cloning - I was going great guns, then I lost the will to live).

A very nice image BP, it reminds me of cregannen lake in North Wales.

The rock stays for me with the personal proviso it is lightened a little, also I think the bright white water in the foreground is a distraction and the contrast also makes the rock appear darker.

I would change the colour to match the rest of the autumn colour refelction and darken it slightly.

That's just me, and for your consideration.

I did lighten the rock but Paul has gone further and I have to say made a superb job of it.

Personally I prefer the pale blue at the bottom as its a reflection of the pale blue sky - but it does lend a certain calmness to the shot.

Thanks everyone for the input.

By the way this is a eight shot in-camera multiple exposure to smooth the water but still leave some detail - see below the comparison to a single exposure:
