What’s going on there? Do people shoot shotguns off to scare the birds away?

No not just any person most if not all airports have some form of bird scarer sometimes a shotgun is fired on base or other types used as birds tend to gather on the grassy sections near runways, some have in past used hawks and falcons to scare them away(fully trained) if one of those birds gets sucked into the air intake on a jet it can be deadly, remember the Red Arrows plane that went down couple years ago at RAF Valley on Anglesey that was a bird strike the pilot managed to eject just in time but the crewman in second seat didn’t hit eject button in time and sadly died, Rolls Royce used to have a test bed near where I live at an old RAF and they used to throw frozen chickens into the comment engines during some of there tests, Commercial plane have much larger engines and vanes inside and able to stand up to them more but not always remember that passenger plane landed in river near New York that was a bird strike as well
