I have just googled that and would you say the tail is an important part of the identification

and would you belive I went through six sites all with images and not one showed the wings open all showed the tail covered up with the wings

Well yes they do seem to be one and the same

And so be it

 

These are known as St Mark’s flies as they are seen around St Mark’s day (April 25th). It is also known as the March fly - but this is its American name, so it is best to call it the St Mark's fly here in the UK.
