Nice shots.I think they are St Marks Fly also known as Hawthorn Flies

I have just googled that and would you say the tail is an important part of the identification

and would you belive I went through six sites all with images and not one showed the wings open all showed the tail covered up with the wings

Lovely capture Fuzzy. I was gonna suggest a March fly, but I would have been very wrong as they keep their wings closed when resting......I think!

These are known as St Mark’s flies as they are seen around St Mark’s day (April 25th). It is also known as the March fly - but this is its American name, so it is best to call it the St Mark's fly here in the UK.
