Nice capture - crying shame you didn't use a higher ISO and get it sharper.

I wasn't expecting it BP. Camera wasn't in continuous focus mode or anything, and the heron magically appeared from nowhere!

Beautiful Paul, Always think there is something a little prehistoric about herons in flight

They are pterodactyl-like I know...  :)

Nice capture and the Heron is nice and sharp.

Ta - it came out better than I expected it to.

Auto ISO is one of the very best innovation on modern DSLR's - many top end pro photographers rely on it day-in-day-out to make their living as the ultimate way of getting the result they need.

Set a shutter speed - set an aperture - define the focusing parameters and let the camera do the rest.

Paul I'm not getting at you here so don't take offence but it is generally luddite amateurs that bang on about using manual, having control, bleating on about "I want to be the one making all the decisions not the camera" and all the other 'I know best' clap-trap.

Photographers shouldn't look upon auto as something people who don't know what they're doing use - they need to look upon it as something those who really know what they are doing use to get the results when setting everything manually isn't an option.

I rarely use full manual, but tend to avoid auto as much.

I agree though, that there is a situation for every option.

I think there is still a confusion between Program and Auto. In days gone by, Program was what we call Auto now - it was the closest to letting the camera decide everything, both before and after autofocus came in. Nowadays there is Auto - which decides the ISO, the metering mode, the 'scene mode', and does everything for you - and Program which allows the user (if there's time) to adjust all settings except having to set the aperture / shutter speed. But in either case, there is EV +/- adjustment, which allows some control over aperture and / or shutter speed.

I think that even P mode now allows virtually the equivalent of manual control, as you can set the maximum ISO, the minimum shutter speed, the autofocus modes, the metering mode, all kinds of thing.
