............................. in the nick for this... I would have given him 10 years and banned him from driving for life. He had his two kids in the car and when he eventually crashed into another car he tried to do a runner and left them.

That is a disgrace. he is lucky not to have killed his kids and other innocent road users. Daily Mail like or not, I think that should be viewed as attempted manslaughter...OK maybe no such thing exists but he clearly knows how bad his actions were by running off to try and escape, and he had no regard for human life whatsoever!!!!

Now, deep breaths David...OK calmed down now :)

There were two people in the car he collided with when driving through a red light, a 80 plus year old lady and her son who was driving. I'm not sure what their injuries were but they were both taken to hospital. I don't read the Daily Mail or any other rag for that matter, but if they agree with me then bully for them.

I assume he has a 2 year sentence? then I think that fair, don't see why I should pay for him to be behind bars longer than that. But I would give him a 3 year ban and make him retake his test, retaking your test doesn't come cheap especially if you're driving isn't' up to standard. As for any drug related crime that should be a separate judgement.

I thought I read he was already banned from driving - so no insurance etc

Gawd knows what the answer to this type of thing is, and its a difficult thing to find any balance where the kids in the car are concerned, I would suspect, once again, that the drug habit is the root cause :-(

A shining example to his kids

He clearly thinks nothing of his children, so I agree, lock him up and keep his children and other road users safe.

Rather than put us to the expense of keeping him under lock and key, I propose this radical solution instead:

1. Assuming the mother is still around, ban him from the family home for a period of time.

2. A lifetime ban from driving.

3. Commit him to a curfew bail hostel each night, for which he has to pay until he's worked off his sentence.
