Beautiful Golden Y

Recommended Posts

As opposed the the Plain Golden Y, this young moth had recently emerged from it cocoon - the wife found it on the inside of our garden waste wheelie bin, so it must have been on something we've gardened into it.

I encouraged it onto a flower on the clematis and it stayed there for a short while while I lined up the camera. Just as I pressed the shutter, I think it started vibrating its wings (as these moths do) and moments afterwards it took off.

When I was young and lived with my parents, I used to sleep with the small bedroom window open and the moths at the time seemed nothing but pests as the buzzed flitted around my bedroom.

Now, through seeing so many beautiful photographs of them on here, I have noticed what intricate and pretty little things they are.

This is just one of the amazing pictures that I see on here.

Thanks for sharing.

Butterfly and moth wings are covered in small dusty structures that look like feathers, these are in fact scales and are in no way related to feathers. If you hold a moth in your hand, you'll sometimes see a silvery gold powder on your skin afterwards - its the coating off these scales.
