this was right at the side of someone's house, next to the Industrial estate!!   ...wish I had my tripod with me, focusing using a 300mm in the middle od a windy field is not the easiest  ( yes another excuse!)

I think you have done quite well considering the lighting conditions. I checked the EXIF data and the metering mode was Pattern... that's the same as Evaluative on later Canon DSLR's which is the general purpose metering mode. Maybe spot metering would have been a better choice in this instance. Try both modes next time if the subject stays around long enough. Overall not a bad effort though.

shutter speed 1/32, iso 800, it was 9.30 at night so the light was not too good (another excuse) as for the metering, I have no idea!!  :wallbash:

 

Leon regarding the iso have you thought about doing a test to see how high you can go before the noise becomes unacceptable? Although my old D80 will shoot up to iso 1600 it pretty poor after 600.
