On my way home.....

Recommended Posts

Spotted something just on the road as I was driving home along a country road that has quite a lot of heavy vehicles using it. Thought I knew what it was, and just had to go back for a look. I was right, a Long-necked Tortoise, heading across the road. Sorry, couldn't do anything about the light in this one, it was just the way I approached him, and yes, the road is wet!!:

He had ducked his head because a car passed us going the other way. I moved round and managed to get this:

These are native to our larger area, but you only see them rarely, and it's usually when they are doing exactly what he was - crossing a road to get somewhere.

I then picked him up and moved him across the road. You always move these in the direction they are heading, you never take them back. I then waited 15 mins, but he would not poke his neck out and look round, so had to leave! At least I know he was across the road safely :D

Thanks all, I hate it when the only sighting of these you have is a dead, upside down one that has been hit by a car. Seeing them on the move does hold promise of more lovely stuff from the sky for us - we hope!!!
