Hi all, I'm new to photography and decided to join this forum because it looks relatively small and friendly. I don't own a camera but I recently wanted to record an event and was lent one by my brother in law; it's only a cheap point and shoot but I have now got the bug. I intend to buy a decent camera but since I don't really know what I want I'm holding back. Until that time I want to train my eyes to look and see. Looking forward to sharing some of my images and getting constructive criticism!

Hi Martyn, welcome aboard! :yes

Ya know, I often envy none photographers. It was so easy to pick up the camera and take a snap without giving it a second thought. Now, you're thinking about composition, lighting, DoF etc, not to mention the post processing work involved!

It's all down hill from here I'm afraid, you have my sympathy ;)

welcome along.

we  are a friendly bunch so you will like it here.

as for a camera I use a bridge camera (better than a basic point and shoot but easier to work out than a DSLR) in my opinion you would be better starting with a 2nd hand high end bridge like a HS10, FZ100 maybe?, van be be obtained from the bay of E for £120-150, then if you upgrade it will not really loose any value :)

enjoy your new found hobby, Leon

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Seeing how you're all friendly I thought I would share the reason for borrowing a camera in the first place. This was the Tan Hill Inn, highest pub in Britain, with me making my debut as a clog dancer.

Try and decide what you like photographing before buying and then buy to your strengths whether its people or landscape or macro or abstract or archetecture each has its own way of being taken

Its so easy to buy a super dooper and find you loose interest I know I have sold many a system only to buy later on as the interest grows again

You will by the laws of nature gravitate towards a dslr but dont rule out second hand to keep the cost down

A bottom end dslr with a good lens will be better than an expensive body with a cheap lens

Most of all have fun and dont let it get to you, unless you have deep pockets

I must say that those clogs look quite comfy.

I can honestly say that one of the greatest pleasures in life is to take 'em off! All those folk who say clogs are the most comfortable footwear they have ever worn need to get a life and buy some nice trainers  :jig:

you are quite right, this is a small site, but that means you will soon know everyone, and your posts do not get buried under a thousand others. Don't be afraid of asking for advice regarding buying gear, it may save you from dissapointment later. cheers.
