Printer, lightroom and darker than normal prints

I have a new printer, a Canon TS5150, it wasnt the five ink type I had hoped it would be,  but.. it is printing darker than what I see on the screen.

Now I understand that it may be that the monitor is too bright and I am using lightroom to those settings that caused my prints to be darker. I also have just discovered that lightroom has a 'soft proof' that you can set lightroom  the printer, paper and ink to be in sync. What I dont understand is do I need to set this BEFORE making any adjustments to lightroom and the image I'm about to process or after. Reading what I have so far really does not explain it properly.

Any other hints or advice regarding this problem would be welcome.
