Free RAW editing software?

Recommended Posts

Is there a half decent one available for download ? I for one cannot afford Photoshop, I couldnt make head nor tail of GIMP, and at the point where jpeg images from my D3000 look thin and washed out compared to many photos I see posted on various places..and here.

The camera came with Nikons own ViewNX software, but I was told this was not that good, so I didnt install it. So, for those of you used to Nikon and their software, how good is it and should I install it ?

It does an excellent job of converting NEF files in jpegs/tiffs, what it lacks is all the finer tweaking you get with Photoshop etc.

Best value is Photoshop Elements - pretty much all the major Creative Suite controls without the chaff that very few use.

Out of interest what do you want the RAW editor to do that your camera can't.

I was under the impression that you needed something like photoshop ect to actually process the RAW image, as in post processing.

Since I have paint.net and FastStone to tweak images for jpeg, I thought for RAW  I need a photoshop, or similar program

Nilon Viewnx2 is all you need to process your RAW files and know because I use it all the time, you simply will not get better for 'free'. It is quite simple and very good to adjust w/b, regain lost high lights, etc, as well as resize and crop. Who ever told you it was no good is talking out their bottom.

here is a link to the latest version and if you need any help with 'how to' just ask.
