Canon 800D First Impressions

Recommended Posts

Well, it arrived today, as specified. First things:

a/ It's a little bigger than the 100D, which is probably the smallest Canon DSLR, in all dimenstions..
b/ It's noticabely heavier than the 100D
c/ Most of the buttons are in similar places and do the same thing, there are some new buttons and some quick access buttons not of the 100D
d/ Menus, from the ones I looked at, they where very much the same - slightly different graphics, but pretty much the same
e/ AF Points, well there's a lot more of them, 49 I think. The 100D has 9, you can select either 1 or all. The 800D add to those, Zone AF, where you can select blocks of 9 - didn't work well for bug shots as you needed to revert to single point
f/ Image size.. I think I'm gonna need bigger memory cards, I have 16gb ones, but I think for the 800D, 32gb is probably at the minimum, but 64gb+ will be good

I bought the body only version.

It didn't have the latest EOS Utility Software to download direct from the camera - the old one for the 100D didn't work with the new camera.
It also didn't come with a cable to connect your camera to your PC/Laptop, luckily the EOS 100D/800D have the same connections
Batteries and Chargers are slightly different to the 100D, so not inter-useable, it does also mean I have to take both.

Image Size:
Canon 100D: 5184x3456px
Canon 800D: 6000x4000px

It does mean the 800D uses more memory card space.

Tilt Screen
Yes, it does have one, but didn't get chance to use it. I'm still unsure on this feature, the 100D (and the 1st DSLR I bought) didn't have one.

Overall:
Well after only 50 shots, the extra pixel size does mean you can crop down lower, it doesn't seem to suffer as much with high ISO, certain points of changing the settings for the camera (F stop, ISO, EV etc) are a little more complex/different, but I think that's just a matter of getting used to a new camera.
