Indoor Backlighting Advise Please (In A Mini Pop Up Studio)

Recommended Posts

I picked some poppies today and this included some unopened 'hairy' buds. I want to do a close up shot in my mini 'pop up' studio having them backlit to pick up and highlight the hairs. Can anyone advise me?

I have:

1 pop up studio
Black, white, red and blue backdrops
2 mini studio lights
2 speedlights

Can anyone advise the best way to achieve the lighting effect?

Lighting effects is a minefield for me and something I really, really need to upskill on.

Thanks

Im guessing that to be the case Chris. No worries, I just have no idea where to start.

Chrissy I also have not done it myself with indoor lights but my advise is try to mimic natural light this means if trying to replicate the lighting in my image below then a single warm light source at about a 30% angle behind the subject try it with the lighting undiffused and diffused, and use a good lens hood. That's all i have to offer sorry.:)

Hi Chrissy ... I agree with Paul about trying to use natural light whenever possible ..I have used lights in a home made studio in the past with various bits of  card...I found this  clip on you tube  which might give you a few ideas .. Good luck and  let us know the result ...

I would suggest put the backdrop at the back (clues in the name lol) then the lights down low pointing up then the poppies on a pedestal in the light beam but high enough that the lights are out of shot.

It is situation like this that make exploring photography for yourself such fun.

Experiment - play - muck about - think things through - don't think things through and just take pictures with a hope and a prayer - have fun - don't worry if it doesn't work first time - be creative - be a bit daft - post your results and ask how they could be improved.
