The Canon 17-85mm has very good optics, the Sigma 17-70mm, at least on mine and someone else's that I worked with, was subject to flaring.

Another option is the 18-200 IS by Canon if you can find one.

I want the wider end of the lens, if I put EF on a crop sensor i'll be defeating the object of having wide angle.... think this is the reason I fell out with my nifty 50..

What are you planning to shoot?

My 18 - 135 never seems wide enough or long enough. I have a Sigma 10-20 which for the money can't fault.

A 10-20 ef-s lens will still give you an effective focal length at the widest of 16 mm, to be clear. So you'll need to bear that in mind when thinking about what focal length you want.

It's the sensor cropping the image, not the lens mount.

new toy!!!!

it's very heavy, only just fits in my camera bag whilst on the body, very fast focusing , I LOVE it..... a really good upgrade from the kit lens :)

I have 2 portrait jobs this weekend so I'll put it through it's paces... just  shame it's not F2.8 for or a 'L'  but we can't have everything can we?

In conjunction with your new lens that's what your nifty 50 is for, f1.8 with crop sensor angle of view of a 76mm f1.8. It's 3 stops faster than your new lens ideal for head and shoulder shots. ;)
