Blood Moon

Recommended Posts

Did anyone see the blood moon a couple of weeks ago? I managed to get a shot of it on the 17th, a few days after the eclipse of the full moon that we couldn't see on the North East coast :(

The moon was only red for a short while after rising and turned to an amber colour before becoming a more normal bright white as it rose higher in the sky. It was apparently due to the sun shining through the Earth's atmosphere before hitting the moon. That is also the reason it looks a little distorted

I got another shot of it rising through the clouds when it was a brighter amber colour.

Great shots! I like #2 best.

We had a similar event here in Australia and I was having my tea at the time. Not wanting my tea to get cold, I thought I'd get the camera out after I'd eaten. Wrong!! By the time I got out there, the moon was a creamy colour.

There's a moral there somewhere.

Thanks Brian and yeah it was worldwide some would have been lucky enough to see the actual lunar eclipse.

Very good. I saw the full moons but not the blood one.

Paul.

Thanks Paul and there is another one due in October and another 2 next year, after that it could be hundreds of years before it happens again. It is all to do with the closeness of the moon and the alignment of the moon, mars and the earth.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I had to go to the coast at Seaham again to get the these so I could shoot the moon really low in the sky while it was still red, it was like that for a few nights but losing some colour each night.

I like both, but especially the second. In particular, the way you've captured the top of that dog's head gazing up at the moon...

Thanks Chris and I thought those clouds looked like ears too lol
