I've been experimenting with mixing processed backgrounds and non processed subjects as an alternative for instance to using differential focus or say de saturation to produce some separation.  The first attempt was "The Wine Bar" Here.  Perhaps not surprisingly, it works for some and not others.  This is another.  I would welcome thoughts.

An interesting concept John, not knowing anything about art..(David who? ) but the overall effect looks good, .I do like the diffused background.  The wine bar image captures that effect a little more than this one conveys, but then again they are very different images .

Thanks Denis.   In answer to your "David who?",  have a look at the link below.  It's an image I posted some time ago .  It uses a fish eye lens but you get the idea.  One of his paintings has just sold for millions - apparently a record figure for a living artist.
