Course, sixpence, no idea why I got shilling in my noggin
-
We all have one, a 'drawer of many things'. It's that place where stuff without a place gets put. Old cheque book stubs, receipts for things long gone, paperclips and drawing pins (compulsory), keys for unknown locks... I was rummaging through mine a few years back, and came across a stash of shillings sixpences. They's been in every 'drawer of many things' I've ever had. When I was a kid, my grandad would give me a shilling sixpence everytime he visited, but as he handed it over, he tapped his nose and gave a wink and said "Shh, don't tell anyone." I took this to mean it was top secret, so I'd hide the shillings so nobody found out. I was so scared of giving away the secret, that I never once took them out to spend. And so I still have them, all these decades later What treasure does yours contain?

Why do Nikon still make..

There's still a market for good quality film gear. I recently put my Pentacon Six stuff (two bodies, five viewfinders and six lenses) up for sale on Gumtree and spent a week fighting off buyers from all over the UK and Europe. Almost all wanted it to use, though there were one or two collectors. I was staggered by the prices offered for some of it. A lens I thought was worth thirty quid went to someone in Finland who emailed and offered 130 and the bodies which I thought were going to be twenty quid apiece fetched 50. In fairness, if you want a 'film look' then you can't beat... film. -
Who was that once said "If we stand around 'ere much longer, people will fink we're workmen."?

Unkind, but awesome at the same time

I'm so impressed I can't think of the superlatives. No doubt it will be enjoyed by the thousands of people that see it over the years, and all because you are so talented. I love it to bits

Gotta love a Tessar

Gave up on Windoze years ago. My new laptop last year came with Win8 and it was hideous. Yuk yuk yuk. On linux now, the downside being the lack of 'nice' photo editors. Gimp, IMHO, is aptly named!

Ah, I see what you mean. The lenses for these are also 'intelligent' I gather, and have upgradeable firmware etc. Maybe taking away half the 'intelligence' is making the camera 'guess' things that the Olympus models don't, and hence the difference in performance with other lenses. One of the things in the v1.5 firmware was to make the camera work properly with Sigma lenses. Seeming likely that it's a good camera, but not for my purposes. Most of my use for this thing is with faster manual lenses, so it would seem logical to sell it off and go with an Olympus seeing as I know the combinations work ok. Shame, I really liked the EVF on the Panny, and they're an expensive add-on for the Oly. Live an learn!

I bought this based on seeing no poor reviews, and some really superb example shots, so I can well imagine why people like them. The only thing I haven't tried on it are standard kit lenses etc, because I don't have one. My 'standard' lens for walkabouts is an 18mm f/2.8 set pretty much permanently at around f/8 to f/16. On the E-PL1 it produces really nice sharp images, albeit with a little vignette in the extreme corners. On the G1 the images are soft and a bit 'wishy-washy'. I even tried the latest v1.5 firmware as they reportedly solved a few 'issues' on that version. It's strange, that's for sure. NEX are still out of range at the moment, and I do like to have an EVF (they're expensive for the NEX) but maybe one day. For now I'll try not to think about it until the G1 sells, which I think I'll do in a manner to get the buyer round to try it with their own lens. Yes I agree. Macro is an area I want to play with much more.

No idea Chris, but it's hard to fathom what might be 'wrong' with it given everything's electronic.

Glad it's not just me

I've now given-up on the G1 and it's going back on ebay as part of next Thursday's auction lots. I've not had a truly sharp image from it yet. This is with the same lenses I've largely been using for the last twenty years on one body or another. If it's not sharpness, it a general over-all misty milkiness to the images. Even in jpeg, max sharpen and contrast, the images have a softness about them that I don't like one bit. I've compared images from the same lenses taken on a friends E-PL1 and the latter shows the lens to be more than capable. If I keep the camera, I'll have to post-process every image, and that's where I glaze over and want to drop it in the bin Never had a crappier camera in my life (and I am used to crappy cameras!) Next...

It's less about what I'd lose, but more what someone else will gain by dishonesty.

I don't share my online albums publicly at all. There's little chance of theft/misuse of mine, but yours are a different matter of course.

Great fun! I'd forgotten how good digital was, even in those early days Bet that camera cost a fortune back then!

Glad someone is still using film. I manage three or four rolls a year, but should do more.

Welcome Dave! You're bang-on correct, it really is a very friendly forum Only been here a short time myself, but already I feel quite at home. May your stay be a long one.

Sigma EX DC 10-20MM F4/5.6 HSM Nikon AF FIT?

Congrats! Can't wait to see what you can do with it -
I get almost as much of a kick from making things as using them. Just as well really, cos I'm generally a bit rubbish at the 'using' bit Now off to make a string monopod and see if I can get the camera shake under control...

Sounds like my kinda book

That's the sort of situation where I discover adrenalin is brown

I can't afford a decent macro lens, but I've been aware for years that enlarger lenses are perfect for the job. But I've never liked bellows. After lots of searching I finally found an affordable tube with helicoid focussing built-in, and now I have a very useful lens that goes from infinity down to stupidly-close. Camera shake on the above three images because I hadn't had my third dose of morning caffeine at this stage! I think this is going to be a good fun lens and I'm looking forward to getting out and about with it. Focussing tube was £28 from Camdiox, and the 50mm Minolta enlarger lens £5 from a junk shop. Also snagged a Phago 35mm and Vivitar 105mm lens from the same shop for a fiver the pair. Just need to sort out the sharpness issues I'm having with the G1 now...
