  1. Good for you I know the feeling I got when I saw some of my dragonfly pictures being used in the dragonfly centre at Wicken fen. Chuffed to bits. Landscapes may be another learning curve, but it's also another string to your bow. Go for it

    POTW w/e 29/9/13

Yayyy wtg Paul my kinda shot
  3. Most people really don't want any more than blemish removal or 'easing' of lines, they want to appear their natural best (I exclude things like plastic skin for magazines which aren't real life anyway)
  4. I think you may need to look at your diet, Chris.. Looking a bit fragile there
  5. p.s. please excuse the smug look, I think it mght be understandable with these three ladies on my arms
  6. hehe nice choice, Annie and thanks for the grins, Barbara
  7. You'll have to guess which one is me
  8. I'm coming from the other direction to many in that I have never owned a video camera of any sort. My 5Dii will take HD video and with a decent lens on the front, the quality is extremely good (sound does really require an external mic). However I use mainly stills and just occasionally venture into video land when I am tempted to record a performance by a musician/group/entertainer. Would stills taken from the video be any good? Potentially, depending on use. At 1920x1080 pixels that works out at about 2Mb which is great if you want to print postcards or maybe up to 8x5 with a bit of stretching. Next generation of 4K recording will make the stills more feasible for printing (I can't remember the actual resolution), but those sensors are very expensive still.... maybe in another few years.
  9. That looks interesting, a camera with interchangeable lenses that can be used underwater (hopefully nobody will actually try to change the lens underwater ), and with functions built in for underwater white balance etc. Could be an ideal beach/snorkel holiday camera with that kind of sealing. Possibly a bit niche, but that's what people said about the GoPro and those are turning up in loads of places.
  10. No I didn't, but I'll bite. I was attempting to be balanced and pointing out what I see every day at work. 1700 computers in the sites I work at, and currently there are about 25-30 macs in the design departments and a couple of linux/android/unix computers. Everything else is Windows based. That is the real world of a mixed office/sales/manufacturing/marketing environment, and business is still the biggest user of computers over personal.
  11. That's a relief, much more balanced then.
  12. They surely are, but why only expose them to one system when they are at the early stages. At the very least they should be exposed to all three, OSX/Win/Linux. and if there are tablets such as the iPad, surely they should also be using Android and possibly Windows (when they get it working right)
  13. Brings back memories of the first computer in my old school, I never got my hands on it (probably a good job) and I never actually knew why it was there. No IT classes and it wasn't used in any subject as far as I could tell. Maybe it was just an empty shell Without wishing to get into the Windows/Mac/Linux debate, should they really be using macs and nothing else? It certainly doesn't set them up for life in the real world where 90+% of business computers are Windows based, and Macs are primarily used in the arts/design world. If it's engineering then PC/Unix is probably more appropriate since I don't think programs like autocad and solidworks run on OSX (I may be wrong there) Disclaimer.. I work in IT build and support - computers/servers/networks/telephony and I use, configure and troubleshoot Windows/OSX/Linux on a daily basis.
  14. It shouldn't fail that quickly, even if it's been on the shelf for a while as Dave suggests. I'm still using three batteries from when I bought the camera and grip over four years ago, and 40k frames and a few hours video, all get rotated each charging sequence. It sounds more like a fault and there's not much you can do about that, it's almost certainly out of warranty.
  15. It may seem obvious, but whatever you do, don't use steel wool!!!
  16. Greetings Paul, welcome to rhe friendliest site around

Well done John, a cracking winner. Good choice Richard
  18. Excellent catch with sharp details and enough movement in the tyre to show the speed.
  19. Or maybe just the members talk to other people that they meet when out taking photographs? You can blame Annie for me being here because she did just that (but please forgive her )
  20. I'm with John on this one. I've been on a number of larger sites and they are generally nowhere near as welcoming as this, some are very cliquey (sp?) and some get downright nasty if you have the temerity to point out something you don't like about a picture. The larger sites may have more members and have more pictures being posted but very few of them will have as much discussion on any picture, sometimes veering offtopic but hopefully still with relevance. When people only join at a slow rate, they have the time to get to know the regulars and vice-versa before the next person comes along Although there will always be people who don't contribute regularly or at all if they find other things to keep their interest, it'll always happen that way. One of the biggest sites I know with many thousands of members struggles to get any discussion on many of the pictures posted, and the forums are much quieter than this! yep, I'll pull up my armchair and keep comfortable.
  21. Is it worth telling how you did the test so we have a means of comparing if we notice a problem?
  22. That was a handy meeting, Look forward to seeing the results.
  23. An excellent choice, and I like your thinking on why you chose the picture. Well done on the PotW, Korky, a worthy winning image
  24. Same post in multiple forums on there, I'm a bit surprised they haven't been purged yet as it's obviously a spammer, are there any mods on that site?
