During the past few weeks it has been necessary for me to make almost daily visits to our local hospital to see a very sick brother. Yesterday, I left a little early for my bus so had time to browse the bookshop run by volunteers, I flippantly asked if they had any photography books. To my surprise the lady pulled down a large 1980s book......LICHFIELD ON PHOTOGRAPHY......as you all know, he isn't with us any longer.......Practically the whole volume is obviously dedicated to film cameras, film types, settings and darkroom techniques ( that make me feel very grateful that Digital photography developed) .....but the essays he writes on exactly what Photography is, or is meant to be are fascinating and remain true today. They are too long to quote on here, but should you come across the work, it is well worth paying 50 pence for at a charity bookshop. At one point he is asked......" Is Photography an Art?" ..........the reply......." Sometimes" We can never stop learning, even from those who have passed on to the Great Darkroom in the Sky. Philosophical FUJI
