TARGETED PROCESSING AND SHARPENING...VERY USEFUL

Recommended Posts

I know that post processing in depth isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for those who do dabble this excellent tutorial should be very useful......the comparison between his original Raw shot and his final product is truly amazing.

For me personally, he uses far too many layers, but then, he is a pro, making a living from what he does.

The techniques shown here are a more complicated version of what I do ........working only in selected areas, at different levels and opacity in a very subtle manner .....using masks, then inverting them to apply the change becomes second nature after a little practice.

Please don't think that these techniques only work on Portraits.....with a little Skills Transfer, they can be applied equally as well to ANY photograph....

The main thing to remember is to apply any changes seamlessly as you go....

An excellent tutorial, well worth studying....

Proof is in the Pudding as they say.....here you can see that by using techniques in the tutorial,  I have had a real good go at achieving similar results in the eyes and facial hair on this portrait:

This was a practical excercise, so please ignore the dodgy background efforts.

This is just one of my practice files:

OK, a much better attempt at brightening and sharpening the eyes as in the Tutorial...........this was more like the portrait the tutor was using to demonstrate on.

This was a Drama Student who was looking after a ...Face-Painting...stall at a local event during last summer:
