Shame on me...I have lived but a mile or so from this piece of Scottish History, passed it many many times but never ever captured an image. Just managed to capture before they slipped back into the afternoon shadows

The Bear Gates at the old entrance to Traquair House, which is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. The house has a wealth of historical connections and has been visited by 27 Scottish and English Monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots. When the 'Young Pretender' passed through the gates on his departure from the house in the early 18th Century, the 5th Earl swore that they would not be opened until a Stuart was once again on the throne in Scotland. The gates have remained closed ever since. Copyright © Transcotland Ltd. 1997.
