I was thinking something more like this : I understand what Geoff is saying about space, but for me the greater need is to remove the distraction of that trunk and leave only a dappled semi-abstract pattern of shadows. In a psychological way, that kind of does give more space, as the sitters are isolated in a natural abstraction - a photographic double meaning (I apologise if that sounds pretentious) - without a large heavy (and to me, interfering) presence at the top of the picture, leading the eye away from the sitters and out of the picture..

(But it's a good study whichever way you  hack it :) )

Now I'm confused! ;-)

THANKS ALL.

Sorry, I was waffling. There's a kind of pun here : the sitters are absorbed in their own 'abstraction', but the dappled tree shadows are also a kind of abstract(ion). Without the trunk, it's more obvious, but also - to my eyes - more pleasing.
