THE CLASSICAL MAN

I know, I shouldn't, but how could I walk past this portrait opportunity?

Two things came together that I have been patiently waiting for this morning......what you might ask?

A great portrait subject, was standing close to a newly painted roughcast wall, that is always softly lit through an overhead opaque glass walkway.

My subject is one if the town's favourite buskers, he is a seriously good Classical Guitarist who can hold passers by spellbound as they listen to his amazing playing. He knows me well now, having been my subject more than once.

Trouble is, I didn't have a proper camera with me, and I'm currently wearing a blooming great black eyepatch when out and about.

He was just setting up his gear, including a large umbrella to protect his amplifier and speakers.....as we chatted, I remembered I had my Nokia 1020 in my pocket........he readily agreed to this shot.....obviously all done automatically.

I post two versions, both cropped then edited with SNAPSPEED on my iPad..........I'm quite impressed, but which one do you prefer?

That's Nigel Kennedy innit??

I prefer the colour in this case - as the only real colour is the flesh tones. Very simple. The B&W is ok too, but perhaps a tad high key for its subject? And the flesh tones aren't distinct from the background.

Cheers! Chris,

Your comments are spot on in this case, currently I'm suffering from acute camera and computer withdrawal symptoms, not having a camera and seeing lots of potential shots is very frustrating as is the inability to process a phone camera shot, as I might one from my GX7 in Photoshop.

As I explained, I have been waiting for ages for a decent portrait subject to appear close to that newly painted wall, and it would happen when I'm handicapped by a very dodgy eye meaning that I'm not 100% with my photography.

Not excuses, but just as things are..........so frustrating.

After seeing the Eye Specialist on Tuesday I will know more and be able to discuss the limitations on my healing eye......I am hoping that he advises I use it as much as possible as an aid to healing.

Colour for me too, as the shadows around his ears seems to have come out like he has hairy ears on the B&W,  which you don't usually get on your mono editing.

I guess it's hard for you to see with only one eye.

I see what you mean Nanny....... This is what happens when the smaller JPEG emailed from my phone to my camera gets used

, then processed on my iPad using the SNAPSPEED app.

When I get the OK to use my desktop, I will upload the huge, straight-from-phone camera file, so should have much more scope........I just wanted to keep my eye in so to speak ;-)

You have to get your eye sorted first. Don't go straining them as the picture will still be there waiting for you when you can see better.
I think you have done really well with the editing, especially with one eye.
I have often tried looking through one eye to see how things would be if I ended up losing the sight of one for a while and it's pretty difficult to focus on a particular part of an image, I know.
