Ruddy Darter Female being cooperative

Recommended Posts

I spotted this ruddy darter female this morning at Wicken fen, and took a few  pictures with the longer lens, then moved in a bit for these using the sigma 105.

I had heard a couple of ladies moving around on the boardwallk and they had stopped some distance away so as not to disturb whatever it was I was photographing, then when I stood up, they came and had a look and asked what type it was and I was able to tell them a little about identifying this one and how it differed from the common darter (white stripes on the legs of the common is the most obvious marker).

While we were talking the darter took off and landed a couple of times always near the same spot so I did the usual trick of putting my hand out near the landing zone, and the dragonfly helpfully landed on my hand and seemed totally unconcerned while I moved my hand so the onlookers could get a better look.

Not the best of pictures but another special moment both for me and the ladies who apparently had never seen one so close before.
