I took this as a competition entry to depict mental health issues. The model is actually my husband, and he dozed of whilst he sat there late one night. The watch was left on him for a reason. Some think it spoils the image, I thought it made a statement.

Definitely a compelling picture and well suited to the targetted theme.

As for the watch, I'm split on that aspect. In one way it is a distraction, but at the same time, and for the same reason, it draws the eye to the centre of the picture keeping the emptiness to both sides more balanced rather than if your husband was the only eye catcher.

An interesting discussion on compositional elements could arise from this :)

If it was a picture about poverty then I agree the watch would be an inappropriate distraction. But what on earth does the wearing (or not) of a watch have to do with mental health issues? Those critics were WAY off the mark. There's power in that composition.
