Bad dragonfly photo for ID?

Recommended Posts

This dragonfly settled for about 5 seconds and was gone again. One quick, out of focus, long range, picture was all I managed.

Normally I'd junk this immediately but I looked twice and I'm not sure about the species.

I am wondering if it's the female of the black tailed skimmer (which doesn't have a black tail) as that is the nearest I have managed to find. I'm fairly sure it's not a broad bodied chaser (not flat enough) nor a scarce chaser (no line of triangles on the back).

any ideas?

Thanks John. This is a new one on me as I've only ever seen the male before (and only once).

I've certainly never seen one either, you are lucky having Wicken Fen close by... I'm jealous. If we can pick a nice day when you and Annie are available I'll come over and have another day with you both... can you stand it??? Sometime maybe I could take you to my favourite butterfly wood, July/August would be best.
