What does this do?

Recommended Posts

While at the Easter Fair at a little place near us called Rheola. Population 28 (and I'm not lying), but they put on a really impressive Easter fair, with Wood Chopping, Sheep Dog Trials, Clay Pigeon Shooting, the lot. One of the minor sections is historic stationary engines, which drive all manner of farm implements. This home made gadget was among them. It is driven by a flexible drive just seen in the bottom corner. This is obviously home made but a multi thousand pound machine couldn't do any better.

What do you think it does?

Definitely a ....Rope Winder.......

There are Rope winding sheds in Bridport Devon.......and......in the Royal Dockyards ( Portsmouth?) there is a Rope Walk so long that the current demonstration staff need bikes to get from one end to the other.......it is worth looking up on YouTube if you are interested.

Rope making in your part of the world would have been very important when you think of the nature of the country and the needs of the early rural communities.

Rope Winding is a centuries old craft.........it was SO important to Great Britain because it has always been a Nautical nation.

Here endeth the History Lesson.

Great pic, by the way........Love country shows............I used to tour many in England demonstrating my wooden Toy Making, and selling my toys.
