The mysteries of film

Recommended Posts

This very short piece extols the virtues of analogue film, its mysteries and 'emotional language'; compared to digital, which the speaker says is like 'working with all the lights on' with all sense of mystery and accident removed.

It's an interesting thesis. What do members think?

A very interesting and thought provoking presentation Chris....

But.........I think the Film vs Digital arguament is very much the same as...

The old Manual gearbox cars vs the smooth gear boxed vehicles of today..........................The old type, lovely to drive to and from  Vintage Rally for like minded folk................but you wouldnt want to drive one regularly from Cornwall to Scotland.....Woud ee now?

I will stick to my Digital gear thanks................my recent little venture into film cost me over £30 and a three week wait for the mono prints.....OK for those with the dosh, the artistic bent and contacts within the ART WORLD methinks?

I do take your point Fuji, but I think you make the wrong comparison. Manual vs synchromesh gearboxes are a natural evolution of technology. Comparing manual and automatic gearboxes would be more accurate, or even better - vinyl records versus CDs. Mirabile dictu - vinyl still  lives, because it has an acoustic quality that is subtly but markedly different from digital. So I think film is like vinyl - it will always be a niche product, very much a minority, but it will probably survive.
