AN EASY DIY MACRO FLASH REFLECTOR/DIFFUSER

Recommended Posts

I have just been testing my new DIY Macro Flash Reflector/diffuser, it fits over any flash unit and is extremely easy to make.

To Make, is the wrong term really, because they come already made, in the shape of the standard oblong...............Plastic Container, the type with a sealable lid via four drop plastic clips, I obtained mine from our 99p Store, so no real outlay either.

All you do is to draw around the head of your Flash Unit, then you very carefully ( and I mean carefully the plastic is brittle), I used a Stanley Knife.

The opening should be cut to be very slightly undersize at first, this enables you to slice a little off the edges at a time until the container pushes firmly on to the Flash Head.

Now use strong scissors to cut off one of the lid flaps from a long side, this flap-less side will be at the bottom when you refit the lid, cutting away the flap allows more light to pass.

Now for the Reflector and a Diffuser bit.

Take the Container off the Flash, then cut and fit, then fix kitchen foil all along the INNER Top of the diffuser to form an efficient Flash Reflector.

Now, re-fit the lid with the Clip-Less side to the bottom..........push the DIY Diffuser on to the Flash Unit.....

I have experimented with mine using a 2.8 -100 Macro lens, the container is slightly longer than the lens fully extended, so light gets to the right area.

Today is very dull, so ideal test conditions for poor light.....With the camera set to S 160 .....A between F10 and F16 ......the Flash EV at full power......ISO at 200 to 400 ........this gives excellent results so far.

Should you find a shiny bug, a single layer of white tissue along the INSIDE bottom of side of the diffuser and possibly inside the lid, will soften the brightest flash to prevent harsh reflections.

Picture proof to follow in due course.........( if I find a willing insect, spider of bug that is.
