Is this diffraction?

Recommended Posts

Here is a photo I took this evening of a small flower in the garden, a Viola I think. Can anyone tell me why there is a blue edge around the petals; is this diffraction? The focus is soft which probably doesn't help. This shade of purple is also near the end of our visible spectrum which may play a part. The pic was taken on a Nikon D5100, Nikon 18-105 @105 with 69mm of extension tubes, iso 100, 1/200 sec, f22. Lightroom was set to remove chromatic aberrations.

Hi Martyn,

I think that you may find it is chromatic aberration, and it is the lens which is the cause of the problem. You can correct it to a certain extent in photoshop (filter/lens correction), however I don't know about any other software.

I am not sure if it is chromatic aberration as it isn't restricted to the high contrast areas. I don't know exactly what diffraction is, but I agree that whatever it is, it will almost certainly be caused by the lens and/or extension tubes.

I'm sure that I learned somewhere that many flowers use Ultra Violet Light, as a way of attracting the specialist eyes of pollen seeking and pollinating insects.......perhaps you camera sensor was picking up a little of that UV glow, because you are in extremely close?

Might be worth looking at UV light and flowers?
