The beginning of that last one reminds me very much of the backing to Buddy Holly, his band, way back in 1956 innovated this kind of thing.

Just listen.........all those years ago Eh?......I was 18 at the time.....

You just have to love Knopfler, I think he is one of the special few where the instrument becomes part of them or he of it.

 

I cant think of a more gifted guitarist plus he has always been a down to earth cool guy, I,ve always liked that about him.

I always have loved Knopfler too. But I have to admit that he probably learned everything he knew from listening to JJ Cale.
