Camera bag?

Recommended Posts

What camera bag?

I dont have a lot of gear so I dont ned something huge, been looking at these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Backpack-Rucksack-General-Panasonic/dp/B001H9SK2I/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1382667186&sr=8-15&keywords=camera+backpack

it looks like a copy of a Lowerpro Slingshot 200 (which I don't have the budget for at the moment)

what bags do you use, any recommendations?

i think a lot depends on which type of bag you want.

for the field i use a lowepro 4 aw shoulder bag, i can get dslr, macro, 300 zoo and a 50mm lens in it with no bother, also at a push the external nissin flash.

pleanty of room for cards, battries, drink and a few bickys or bag of crisps.

been using it for 3-4 years now.

the only downside ihave is when doing macro/close up's and bending forward the bag moves forward as well with the weight, if dry and safe enough i just put it on the floor so it's not a major problem.

i am now going to try out a back pack bag. it is just a 7 day shop cheapy but i got it so i can put all my gear in it for when i do weddings so i wont be carrying it around much.

i didn't get a back pack bag for the field because i think when you want to change lenses you have to take it off, whereas the shoulder bag i can change with the bag still over the shoulder, using it to rest the camera body or lens on and the lens slips into the bag when changed.

There are two types of bag you eventually finish up with. The big "home storage bag" that takes all your photo equipment including the kitchen sink, which eventually gets left at home most times, and the one you eventually buy just large enough to take only the equipment you need for a shoot when you tire of lugging the big one around!

The Pro's have several sizes of bag and just decant the equipment they need into the smallest one adequate for the shoot.  Whereas many armatures buy a bag big enough to take every lens and accessory they have, plus anything else loose in the house they can pack in, and then if they can't take the car up to the subject struggle to lug the bag along in cross country hikes. Obviously it depends on your type of photography. If the equipment is car carried everywhere then weight is no object, but if you have to walk any distance to do your photography then the less weight in the form of bags containing unneeded photo equipment you have to carry the better.

I too have an original Billingham, but these days mostly just carry this:-

I got this one a few months ago.

It's a bit of a squeeze getting the 3200 in with the 50-300mm lens in as the lens is quite big.
I have moved the inner box back slightly and I can just squeeze it in. The smaller lenses when fitted are fine.
There is not padding on the top of the inner lining but you could use some foam or an old divider if you want to. There is room at the back for bits and pieces and a couple of pockets outside. One big enough for a bottle.

It's a nice casual bag, but if you want to take more than a medium and a smaller zoom then it wouldn't be for you.
I take a light waterproof jacket in mine at the back as well as a couple of sandwiches and a bottle in the front pocket. I call it my grab an d go bag lol.
