Am gonna google it anyway, Raynox ??? Sorry but a bit behind the times, Lenses would usually have aperture references and focal length, along with Macro Ratio's.. to help with members that dont know the terminology of Raynox, it may be an Idea to explain the Lens / Camera etc

not sure what you mean regarding "aperture references and focal length, along with Macro Ratio's" the lens (Canon 55-250) does have them but with a raynox DCR 250 and a ladybird thats walking across a tile theres no time for calculations

Ah I see, this is an additional lens that you screw onto your existing lens / Camera

Every SLR / DSLR lens will have information that shows its operation, so the 70-155mm is its focal length through its zooming, the f4 - f5.6 would say that through the zoom function the maximum aperture gained would be from f4 to f5.6.. then on some lenses would be a ratio, so 1 : 2, this shows the lenses "Macro" capability..

Adding a lens, like the raynox, will not allow you to correctly alter your focal length and aperture, hence the lack of control over the final image

You can get the same results on SLR / DSLR by using Tubes that you mount you lens on, so give an actual gap between lens and camera, this again justs alters the focal lenght that you cant control..

Cheers

sorry I thought there was other info, I understand focal length and apertures the lack of control over the final image is nothing to do with the raynox or the lens or camera it was caused by the live animal walking towards the lens, theres no setting on any camera to compensate for that when the camera is on slider rails on a tripod lol

as I said in the text, I got two shots before she flew off. You get loads of time to set shutter speeds , iso's. apertures etc etc etc when your subject is an inanimate object, not so with a live ladybird that wants out .

Ok, sorry, but the tripod with the slider, with the camera set on it, with a raynox lens, im sorry but looks like time was not the issue, incorrect camera settings may be, im not knocking what you had at your disposal, but maybe a hand held shot then ok.. im just trying to help with the camera settings, thats why we post in these areas to maybe see how others would have done the same shot ..

Steve. the camera was on the slider rails on the tripod ready to shoot a piece of jewellery the ladybird appeared and was grabbed stuck in front of the camera and photographed. I appreciate that you dont know what a raynox is and so will not know that the depth of field is minimal with a raynox. to get a 6mm ladybird in focus you need to use f22 or f35 unfortunately mine was set at f5.6 so the depth of field is about 4mm or less hence the ladybird not being crisp. I appreciate that we post these things to get feedback but unless you have used a specialist piece of kit like a raynox to photograph a moving live animal it will be very difficult for you to provide helpful camera settings as the raynox add on means the normal lens behaviour doesn't apply.

Thanks for that Richard, comments well taken, but I would have to question your reply in the terms that if you think adding glass to a lens is a specialist thing, where it gives you a very low control over your settings,

If you want to Shoot Macro, buy a dedicated Macro Lens.. Tubes, Add ons will only give you "Uncontrolable" results..

I find it a little abusive that Admin can question someone that obviously knows photography enough to question a " Screw on Lens "

Steve

sorry if I offended you there I was merely explaining the history of the shot

Not quite sure what you mean by this line

you believe you know photography and technically you do seem to know all the facts and figures. However I'm not sure what it is you find abusive. I have stated the situation that the image was taken in, I have explained that the camera was set up for one kind of shot and used to take a very different kind of shot. I have most certainly not been abusive in anyway what so ever. I know that an expensive macro lens will give far better macro shots than a forty quid raynox but if I buy a forty quid raynox and decide I'm not really interested in macro then its no loss.

again sorry if I offended you but I totally refute that I was abusive.

Ok mate, fair enough, but please dont say that a shot is because of poor use of camera skills, and the use of poor equipment, that really helps nobody.. yes I do have technical skills, and would love to pass them on to everyone, but when I mention something about an image I get shot down....

erm I wasnt the one saying I was using poor equipment or poor use of camera skills, it was poor luck to have the camera set for a product shot and trying to get a wildlife shot.
