I love these Phil.......the first one is the best.....if it were mine I would use curves in layers to darken the BG, then the same method to lighten the face, you have incredible potential to really make the reflections his specs really POP! In a similar way that I process chrome, thn play with selective sharpening to emphasise his stubbly chin, again doing a little at a time on flattened layers.....there is lots of texture and tone to b teased out of his hair too.......hope you don't mind all this, but I noted that you aren't a fan of B&W.......Have a good play with this using my mono conversion method and I might just convert you?

I think pointing your camera at strangers can be uncomfortable but it also depends on where you are, how you behave and whether you portray people with respect.

 

Here you have a character that nobody could call handsome, but the word character is exactly right for his lived-in look, and the mono conversion fits well. Maybe a slightly grittier look would bring out even more character, but I do like both of these.
