Have you got crabs?

This is an attempt to rescue a shot that went totally wrong. These two boys left their scooters and a bucket of crabs on the jetty and went for a walk. The sun was so bright that I couldn't really see the camera screen; I ended up with a large area to the left which was totally burnt out by the sun and my wife's hand in the picture on the right as she pointed to something. I tried to retake the shot but the boys (and the moment) had gone. I cropped it severely, upped the contrast and converted it to B&W.

I quite like the shot, but it's still quite low contrast. Might be worth upping the contrast even more or tweaking the levels (or both), there's not much black and almost no white?

Good decision to go for the mono, I can't imagine there was much colour variance in the shot anyway, and the composition works. The cut off shadow just keeps the diagonal lines going.

Thank you for your comments Bugmeister, I'm learning loads of stuff from the folk on this forum. Here is another try. I've been learning about histograms recently, so I used the one in GIMP to bring the highs almost up to the right hand side.
