spirit of 45

Recommended Posts

I watched a docu film called 'spirit of 45' the other night.

very interesting history from world war 1 onwards. although not about the wars, more of the social side of life, the good old days?????

it shows what our great grandparents and grandparents went through and how they lived and what a lot of our parents went through when they were growing up.

the birth of the nhs, private mines and the miners etc.

well worth watching if you can catch it, repeated on sunday at 11.15pm but worth recording if you haven't seen it.

if people think they are poor today, they no nothing.

Thanks for the .....Heads Up....Geoff.......

Hardly any need for me to watch it ....( but I will) .......because at my advanced years.....as a child I was part of that very real pre NHS and Welfare State struggle.......my tiny four foot six mam, struggling with all the household chores and finances whilst dad was fighting in WWII......my step granny and her sister helping out whilst at the same time having their own jobs to go to, my granddad working in the Blitz torn factories of Coventry......before the war, my other granddad, dying very young after working his short lifetime in a filthy tannery.....an uncle struggling to make ends meet finding his wife and baby missing....discovered them drowned in a local pit, then to cut his own throat in despair.......there's more......but scratch beneath the family history of most ordinary families and you too will find this kind of thing........my own life was saved by the then brand new NHS and the first civilian use of Penicillin ....I was ten years old when my appendix burst.....I was seriously ill in hospital for six weeks then had three months off school to recover....no wonder I failed my eleven plus.

Happy Days ????
