I have IE10 on my Windows 7 laptop and that's better than previous versions of IE but it can't be installed on my XP computer which is stuck with IE8. For months I been having problems with IE8 crashing, I've tried disabling and enabling Add-ons but the problem is still there and I've had enough. I have also got Google Chrome and Firefox on my computer, I like Firefox because it's nearer to IE than Chrome but it's not as fast as Chrome, I don't like the text zoom in Firefox and I had to install NoSquint and I don't like that either... too much trouble to use unlike the text zoom in IE. I like the speed of Chrome but I hate not being able to have my favourites permanently on display in a column on the left like in IE and Firefox. I've tried every which way to do this but it's seems impossible... am I correct or am I missing something?

I only use Chrome John, I like the uncluttered look,  go to the three bars at the top right-Settings- Users-import bookmarks. Never had to do it myself so not sure if it works.... Fingers Crossed :)

I have imported bookmarks from IE, I just can't get them on permanent display like IE and Firefox.

I use Google Chrome and have a few of my favourites that I use a lot on the Toolbar that I can just click on the button or add another tab to go to another forum without having to close the first.

Are you using the Favourites tool bar?
I can't get on with IE at all.

Tina... I have set it up the same as you using the tabs for the sites I use the most which number nine. It's just I have loads of favourites and I find it annoying I can't have them in a column on display permanently like in IE and Firefox. Anyway I'll have to get used to it as IE8 crashing all the time is a pain in the a**. I actually much prefer IE when it works OK... it's a bit like I prefer XP to Windows 7.

I must have around 100 favourites listed in IE so I don't think I could put all those on a toolbar Nanny.

Have you tried Microsoft Fix It for IE8 John? This often automatically fixes problems if you download and run it.

Also have you installed the latest Windows updates which often solve previous problems:-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

I keep the Fix It as an icon on my computer to automatically find this site:-

http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

This was what Microsoft once told me to try when I had problems in Vista and works too in later Windows. May be slightly different for XP as I don't think you need administrator privileges?  But all you are trying to do is find the Command Prompt to type in:-

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator (you may not need to do this with XP)

Type the following command and then press Enter.

sfc  /scannow

The sfc  /scannow command scans all system files and will recover corrupted ones.  Then restart computer and see if problem is solved.  Make sure you leave a space between sfc and the forward slash in scannow though or it does not seem to work.

Sometimes if a program crashes through corruption you just have to delete it off the computer and then download it from the Web again to re-install it in order to get rid of the corruption.

I use the drop down menu for the extra sites and have imported favourites from Firefox which show up in my drop down menu and I get on Ok with that.
It does take a bit of getting used to, but I tried IE again a few weeks ago and crashed so many time that I gave up.
I too prefer XP. but I have that on an old broken netbook which is connected to my bigger screen while my son is updating the hardware inb my desktop and as his father-in-law is seriously ill, I have told him to put it on hold.

I have also a MSI netbook and a Samsung one that I have just replaced a broken key on so I am not desperate for my desktop, but I have sent my XP dosc with my son as I don't want 7 putting on my desktop.
The latter two both have 7 and I would love to replace it with XP.

Thank you Dave.

Most of what you have said here I have tried, only last evening I tried Mr Fix It and also uninstalled IE8 (this only takes you back to IE7) and then did a re-install.

I was using my online banking this morning and it crashed again before I have finished... the air around here was blue...  :yes  Anyway this has been going on for too long and I've given up now, I'll continue using Chrome for now and hope I get used to it.

I couldn't get used to Google when I tried it the first time, but am now I have installed it again and gave myself longer to get lo get used to it.

I also copied and pasted some more favourite sites on my desktop as shortcuts which are quicker too get at than going into the drop down menu in Google.

I never had any trouble with any of the IE versions, but it often depends on what else you are running on computer that conflicts with them. Not everybody else's software runs well with Windows and it may not just affect their software but interfere with other software too. I would always be wary of having many different browsers on the computer without deleting those not in use after you have chosen which you prefer and obviously you can't run two antivirus programs at once, plus third party antivirus can conflict at times.

Evidently Adobe Flash Player can often be the culprit if it is not kept up to date and they seem to update it almost every month these days. You need to remove every trace of their old software first if you are having trouble before starting clean with new rather than just using automatic updating and you have to go to Adobe's web page to do that since you cannot do it from Control Panel because that often leaves file fragments behind that can conflict with the new:-

I am sure you have tried all these as well though.

http://www.howtogeek.com/136193/how-to-troubleshoot-internet-explorer-crashes/

To quote from the following link:-

"If IE only crashes on certain pages, it may be that you have an outdated version of Adobe Flash.  Ensure you have the latest version here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If IE still crashes often, even when browser add-ons are disabled:

  • Please ensure that you are running the very latest version of your anti-virus, anti-malware, and/or firewall programs.
  • Please ensure that the drivers for your graphics card are up to date.
  • If you have Google Desktop installed, please ensure that you update to the latest version of Google Desktop.
  • If you have 7-Zip or other Windows Explorer extensions installed, please ensure that you update to the latest versions."

http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp

People often switch automatic updates off, but these are usually brought out to cure such problems. OK the old versions may work with your old software, but if you install anything new on the computer you may get a conflict.

Thanks again Dave!

When there is a new version of Flash Player I get a box on the screen advising me. Re-installing Flash Player was another thing I did at the weekend, I was having trouble using BBC IPlayer but that's OK now.  I've bookmarked your latest links for future reference but I'm giving Chrome a go for a few days to see how that goes.

Cheers, John
