if it were mine I would crop the LHS to just before her ear

 

Im from yorkshire but thats tight Fuji

Can see how it would give space to the right but I dont think it would really improve overall

 

So thats 1 for too tight

1 for nice and tight

and 1 for not tight enough

I love these discussions on composition and I'm with fuzzyedges at being thankful we don't all like the same things.

 

This is actually less than 25% of the full frame but I wasn't happy with the composition and kept cropping in closer until I found one I liked :)

Just out of curiosity, are you never tempted to soften skin a touch?

 

That very much depends on the subject and what the pictures are for.

 

Normally if it's a 'character' picture, then the answer would be definitely not since any lines or imperfections are part of the character. If it's something more on the nature of a portrait, then I may use a small amount of softening along with removing spots (rather than the subject caking makeup on to hide them)

Generally I would say the more natural the better, and as a personal opinion, I really dislike plastic-looking skin!
