BOOK LEARNING

Recommended Posts

During the past few weeks it has been necessary for me to make almost daily visits to our local hospital to see a very sick brother.

Yesterday, I left a little early for my bus so had time to browse the bookshop run by volunteers, I flippantly asked if they had any photography books.

To my surprise the lady pulled down a large 1980s book......LICHFIELD ON PHOTOGRAPHY......as you all know, he isn't with us any longer.......Practically the whole volume is obviously dedicated to film cameras, film types, settings and darkroom techniques ( that make me feel very grateful that Digital photography developed) .....but the essays he writes on exactly what Photography is, or is meant to be are fascinating and remain true today.

They are too long to quote on here, but should you come across the work, it is well worth paying 50 pence for at a charity bookshop.

At one point he is asked......" Is Photography an Art?" ..........the reply......." Sometimes"

We can never stop learning, even from those who have passed on to the Great Darkroom in the Sky.

I got most of my photography books that way, either from charity shops or car boots, but 50p was a great price.

I gave my son a John Hedgecoe one that I had bought for myself and managed to find another one for myself about a year back in Smiths sale books. It was £5 but I had liked the book before and only gave it to my son to help him on his way, so was glad to find a replacement.

For those new to Photography who need an all round book to learn. I got "The Complete Guide to Photography" by Ian Farrell in "The Works" for £7.99 a few weeks ago.

I had paid £15 for it in Smiths for a Christmas present for my son.

It pays to look around and not spend a fortune, doesn't it?

It's weird - I came across a book on my shelves from the mid-80s called something like "1000 Photographic Hints", and I started to read it. It was SO out of date! Yet, I also have a little Mitchell Beazley pocket book from a few years before that, which is still relevant today -  it concentrates on technique and composition and colour and focus, much more than it does on equipment, so what it says is fresh and applies as much to digicams as film.
