You do not need filters

I kind of like that PS technique for the longer shutter speed effect.  Why I would prefer to stick to the ND filter? Because it helps me think fstops / shutter speed etc. Makes me think about and understand what is happening inside my camera.

I hate that bloke in the video, I do. He has a better camera than me, he has a bigger tripod than me, he's younger than me, he's better looking than me, he's cleverer than me and he probably drives a better car than me. However........

My UV filters aren't made of plastic!

Do I detect ol' JH playing a teeny-tiny splodge of devil's advocate here?

It's certainly true that UV or 'haze' filters are completely unnecessary - back in the day we were 'sold' (mugs that we were!) on how essential they were for everyday use, but you can replicate their effect - and more - in Photoshop or similar. And as he points out, a good hood gives a lens all the protection it needs.

His ND thesis was interesting - not something I'd have thought of until he demonstrated it.

I disagreed with his polarising points. I never saw vignetting like that, and can only think he either didn't align it properly, or was using too wide a lens for it. As for those car shots, I thought the one without the filter had shocking glare, while the use of the filter didn't remove the essential shine of the metal.
