I dithered about where to crop. I took some off the bottom but decided to keep the tree roots.

That is not a term I am familiar with. Seems to have squashed the height

I thought about a dark vignette or radial filter but I have been overdoing it recently so held back with this one.

Content Aware Scale is a PS CC tool that reduces/squashes areas with limited detail while trying to hold onto major content within the image. It's not perfect and this is an extreme example but it's a clever tool.

Ah.

I don't have PS so that tool has passed me by.
