Low Light Still Life

Brian

Recommended Posts

I spent an hour or so this morning trawling through this Still Life Forum and was enraptured by the beauty of some of the images it contained. So, fired up with enthusiasm I spent a couple of hours in the garage having a go myself.

Now, firstly, I must inform you, I'm a sucker for low light moody images and that was what I was aiming for. Your critique would be very much appreciated. Illuminated by a torch with duct tape over the bulb, and an eighth inch hole cut in it so I could concentrate the light where I wanted it..

That is really very nice Brian .. well composed and  i love  the use of the spider web pic underneath  the camera ... subliminal  was it for the " digital" world  and the " web" that  influences our lives  now ...The image has a vintage look about the content  yet seems very up to date ..

I really like it . Innovative use of the gaffer tape too :yes!

Thanks, Polly. I'd love to be able to claim I did it for the Web association, but I didn't even get the connection 'till you pointed it out. It was the only picture I had which was almost black. I must say, I had a lot of fun doing it, so you'll probably get bombarded with still life for a while.

It's good to experiment isn't it ... and I think we can inspire each other with some of  our ideas..sometimes they work ...sometimes they don't ... ..  but there's nothing worse than standing still...I don't mind how much bombarding you do So go ahead ... Maybe you might feel some of the challenges  are  up your street ... It isn't everyone's cup of tea but  quite like the  discipline ...Anyway ... looking forward to seeing more still life... a genre  where lighting seems to often need to be   dramatic..

I love the way this is lit. What shutter speed were you using? I think your lighting idea should go on our hints and tips thread.

Thanks, Chrissy. I'll do that.

The settings were...............ISO 200     f14      30sec.

My thinking was, low ISO for richness of colour and no noise. Fairly small aperture for good depth. Long exposure as the light source was very weak and was painted on like a paint brush, layer after layer. Funny thing is, I'm an inveterate tinkerer in Photoshop, but this photo was all done with the light source and just the usual sharpen etc in P/s.
