So the caterpillar Dylan brought home has progressed and has started to change....updates as (if) it does anything more exciting.

Nikon D300s + AF 60mm f2.8D Micro
Eight frames stacked in HelicanFocus - very, very slight adjustment of the levels in PS but otherwise pretty much as is.

Hi BP,

This will be interesting to follow, nearer the time you will have to be on call 24/7 of course, we dont want to miss anything..lol

I could well be wrong but it may be the chrysalis of a Small Tortoiseshell or a Painted Lady butterfly, if it makes it will be interesting to see which.

Very nice image by the way.

I read that a painted lady pupates for 8-10 days before the butterfly emerges...  Isn't it amazing .....all those cells changing beyond recognition in just over a week !!

I bet your boys think these are as good as Optimus Prime ... Transformers!!

If it helps BP keep it out of direct sunlight and quite dry though a little humidity helps this can be some damp tissue in the bottom of the tank.

cheers

Dylan loves this sort of stuff - he had some Burnett Moth caterpillars last year that went through the full change. I'll keep an eye on this one but being at work most days I'll be luck to catch it coming out.

As to a time-lapse then I don't have the space/time to do it properly. Something to think about for a future project though.

Searched the net and Painted Lady seems a good call - thanks I've told the bairn and he's super excited as he though it was (just) a cabbage white.
